Myopia Control for Growing Eyes
Is your child’s vision changing quickly? Myopia (nearsightedness) is becoming more common among children. And once they have myopia, it can progress quickly as your child’s eyes grow.
But the good news is that there are ways to help slow it down. It’s called myopia control. We can use specialized contact lenses, glasses, and medicated eye drops to slow the changes in your child’s vision. Not only can this keep their prescription more stable, it also protects against the higher risk of certain eye diseases and conditions that are associated with any amount of nearsightedness.
At Castledowns Vision Centre, we strongly recommend myopia control to help protect your nearsighted child’s vision for the future.
The first step is to book a comprehensive eye exam for your child so that we can spot the signs early. Our team will be there to help every step of the way.
Book AppointmentWhat Is Myopia?
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, makes distant objects look blurry. It occurs when the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved. This causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it.
Myopia typically begins in childhood and worsens over time. A higher myopia prescription is linked to more risk of eye diseases later in life.
If your child already wears glasses, myopia control can help! If they’re not wearing glasses yet, but nearsightedness runs in your family, we can help assess their risk of developing myopia.
What Is Myopia Control?
Myopia control is an evidence-based approach to slowing down how fast a child’s nearsightedness progresses. The Canadian Association of Optometrists states that myopia is a global public health issue that’s much more than just blurry vision and that myopia control is integral to addressing it.
At Castledowns Vision Centre, we aim to create a management plan that’s tailored to your child’s needs and what makes the most sense for your family. Our myopia control options include:
- MiSight 1 Day: Daily disposable soft contact lenses designed to help slow myopia progression while correcting your child’s vision.
- Myopia control glasses: Specially made lenses worn just like regular glasses that correct your child’s vision and slow the progression of their prescription.
- Combination treatments: In many cases, a combination of treatments may be helpful. We often recommend atropine eye drops in addition to myopia control contacts or glasses. We’ll customize the approach to fit your child’s unique needs.
We also recommend the following lifestyle adjustments for your kids:
- Limit screen time: Reduce prolonged use of digital devices and take regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule (look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes).
- Encourage outdoor activities: Spend at least 1-2 hours outdoors daily, as natural light helps delay myopia onset.
- Schedule regular eye exams: These allow us to monitor vision changes and update prescriptions as needed.
- Encourage breaks: Avoid long periods of near work by incorporating frequent breaks.
Our goal is to support your child’s eye health in the long run with treatment options that work for them.
The Connection Between Vision & Learning
Clear vision is essential for learning, but many children struggle in school without realizing their eyesight is to blame. Blurry vision can make reading the board difficult, while eye strain and headaches can affect focus and comprehension.
The right vision correction can help kids stay engaged, focused, and ready to reach their full potential. Our myopia control methods correct your child’s vision while working to slow myopia progression.
That’s why regular eye exams are so important. These visits help us catch issues early, setting kids up for success in the classroom and beyond.
