Your Vision, Our Priority: Early Detection & Care

Early detection is key to protecting your vision. At Castledowns Vision Centre, we believe in the power of regular eye exams to catch eye diseases early, allowing us to focus on management before they become serious.

Many eye conditions, like glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration, don’t show obvious symptoms early on, which is why routine exams are essential.

Our team is here to guide you through every step of your eye care, providing personalized attention and support to keep your eyes healthy for years to come.

Our Technology

Technology helps us detect eye diseases early. We may use the following during your appointment:

    • Optos retinal imaging captures a wide view of your retina to spot early signs of health issues.

    • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) creates detailed images of your retina to catch conditions like macular degeneration.

    • Visual field testing checks your peripheral (side) vision, helping us detect issues like glaucoma early.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, often due to high pressure in the eye.

Glaucoma usually doesn’t show symptoms in its early stages, which is why routine eye exams are so important. However, if left untreated, it can affect your peripheral (side) vision and lead to vision loss.

Early detection and treatment can help manage the condition and prevent further damage. Treatment options include eye drops, oral medications, laser therapy, and surgery. Regular exams allow us to monitor your eye pressure and protect your vision from glaucoma-related damage.

Cataracts

Cataracts are a common condition in which the eye’s lens becomes cloudy, typically affecting the clarity of vision. They usually develop slowly over time, and early on, you may be able to manage them with glasses or better lighting.

Cataracts eventually require surgery to replace the cloudy lens with a clear, artificial one. This surgery is known to be safe, effective, and can help restore vision.

Regular eye exams help detect cataracts early, so you can stay on top of your eye health and enjoy clear vision for years.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD affects the macula, the part of your eye that controls central vision. It usually develops slowly, and you may not show any symptoms at first.

There are 2 types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD is the most common type. It progresses slowly and causes a gradual loss of central vision.
  • Wet AMD is less common but more serious. It develops quickly and can cause rapid vision loss.

Lifestyle changes and supplements can help slow the disease down. Regular eye exams are key to catching AMD early and managing it effectively.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic eye disease includes a group of issues that can affect your vision, caused by long-term high blood sugar.

The most common form is diabetic retinopathy, which develops slowly without symptoms in the early stages. It damages the blood vessels in the retina, leading to leaks or bleeding.

Regular eye exams play a vital role in detecting diabetic eye disease early, helping to prevent vision loss. Controlling blood sugar levels is key to lowering the risk of developing these conditions and protecting long-term eye health.
